Gundec won his way into VRC Derby contention with an impressive victory in the Derby Trial (1800m) at Flemington on Wednesday. By taking out the ballot free Trial, he has guaranteed himself a start in the $2 million Derby to be run at Flemington on October 30 over 2500m.
Craig Williams took advantage of his early tactical speed and put him into a forward position, where he settled well and enjoyed a good run in transit. When the pressure come on in the run home, he answered the call and was strong to the line indicating he will appreciate getting out further in trip. This was only his second run this time in and he should take good benefit in condition.
We are very excited that we can now plot his course to the Derby knowing he is assured of a start in the Group 1 staying Classic
