The success with tried horses from New Zealand continued with Vanguard at Hamilton on Sunday. Purchased solely for jumping we couldn’t have been more pleased with Vanguards first two Australian starts on the flat where he went down narrowly. He then backed up those good flat runs with impressive trials over the hurdles and steeples before making his Australian jumping debut on Sunday.
At only five years of age, Vanguard is considered young for a jumper. After winning by seven lengths at Hamilton, it has opened up a lot of options at the upcoming May Carnival.
We can tackle the features of the Brierly and Grand Annual or given his age, do we consider the easier option of the Decron Steeplechase and save him until next year for the features with a little more experience.
Looking at his form, Vanguard will only get better in the heavier conditions. It certainly is a nice problem to have with an exciting jumper like him.
Congratulations to the winning connections, many of who we are sure to see at the Carnival in whatever event Vanguard lines up in.
